I cannot get Excel 2016 to open and run a file by clicking on the file from File Explorer. Is there a bug?

    Hi,

Welcome to Microsoft Community and thank you for posting your query.

Do you find this issue only with Excel?

Please check if you’re able to open the Excel files within the application.

To check that open Excel > File > Open > Browse for the files locations.

If you can open files within application then this might be an issue with the file association not set to Excel application.

Please follow the below mentioned steps to correct the file association and check if that helps.

    1. Right click on any of the Excel file.
    2. Select ‘Open With’ from the pop-up menu.
    3. Click Choose default Program.
    4. Select Microsoft Excel in the Programs box.
    5. Check the option ‘Use this app for all .xlsx files’.
    6. Click ok and try to open the file.

Hope the information helps. Do reply if you need further assistance, we will be happy to help you.

    Thank you.

Except for Word2016, Excel and other Office 2016 apps do not appear in the "Open with" dialogue or in the default apps selection in settings.

I expected that Office 2016 would completely overwrite and replace Office Starter 2010 and all other previous connected visualizers etc but it did not seem to  so I did manual uninstall and delete MS Office starter programme and start icons when I bought and installed Office 2016 as clicking on excel and word files to open in explorer and desktop would annoyingly open them in MS Starter 2010 instead of Office 2016 apps and I could not change that via "open with" or default app selection in settings. Now this error message pops up:

If I open the app (eg Excel 2016) I can then open the file from inside the app but I cannot change the file association/properties of the file in explorer to open with Office 2016 apps as they do not appear. If I click to "look in the store" it takes me to buy Office 2016 which I have already bought and installed.

    Hi Michael,

Is your client computer on a company domain? I would check your servers, it almost sounds like a networking communication issue to me regarding shared folders and file. Also, if none of your Microsoft programs work, go to Control Panel>Programs and Features> Right click on Microsoft and select "change/modify" and run a Quick Repair, possibly the program was damaged during the power outage. Keep us posted!
