AAHHH! I just upgraded to PowerPoint for Mac, Office 2016, and I'm getting this same error. I spent a whole week on a presentation that I'm doing to tomorrow and almost all of my images have disappeared. THIS IS TERRIBLE! I'm not sure what I'm going to do.
'The image part with relationship ID rId2 was not found in the file'
Is there a fix for this?? Preferably before tomorrow morning? These are all images that I either created or pulled as screen shots. (All jpegs.)

Unfortunately, yes, if the old slides are already exhibiting the same error. Once the presentation encounters this error, it's broken and cannot be fixed other than by manually deleting what's left of the original pictures and re-inserting them. Inserting a broken slide into a new, unbroken presentation won't help. The slide is still broken.
"As has already been stated, presentations that were affected by this bug must be re-created.
Any new presentation you make will not be affected by this problem if your software is up to date...Your version should be 15.33 or newer."
I have version 15.36, and numerous long presentations, from which I need to use various parts in new presentations. The new presentations are exhibiting the error, when using 'old' slides.
This has happened for 'old' slides existing in presentations on my hard drive.
Recreating long presentations from scratch is not a tenable solution...
If I weren't forced to use PowerPoint, I wouldn't...
...am considering switching to LaTeX (beamer), even though it means I'd have to re-create 100's of slides---but this is preferable to the absurd Office365 garbage... OpenSource ftw!
The issue is what it is.
If a slide deck was damaged by an old build, you have re-create it in the current build.
There is nothing that will automatically fix a damaged deck.

Is it possible to re-open this issue? I just experienced this problem on a 78 slide deck in version 15.36 (170702) on Mac. Nearly 2/3 of the hundreds of images in the deck were affected. It took me 2 hours to assess which images belonged on which slide, and to redo the deck.
The deck was stored in a Dropbox folder and then copied into a Google Drive folder.
