Excel 2016 for Mac does not recalculate

I have a multiple-sheet workbook that does not recalculate after I update some cells. It would only recalculate after I save and then reopen it. My Excel preferences is set to automatic recalculate. After I change the value of cells, the workbook does not recalculate even after I press the F9 key. I have tried Command+F9 to no avail. The workbook had a data connection and I had deleted it. The version is 15.12.3. Any idea what I can do?

ref my earlier question I found an answer that worked:

Why does my formula not calculate in Excel?

Instead the text of the formula itself appears in the cell directly. See example below. Cause: The cell is formatted as Text, which causes Excel to ignore any formulas. This could be directly due to the Text format, or is particularly common when importing data from a CSV or Notepad file

I copied the data from the original import worksheet into a fresh worksheet and the formulas worked fine

As Anthony noted, version 15.26 (160903) does contain the fix. This version has now been released to all audiences. Please make sure your Office is up to date and this problem should be resolved.

    We are sorry that this issue has persisted for such a long time. The Excel team has logged a bug and has reproduced the problem. We thank you for your help in diagnosing the exact problem, which does appear to be not a calculation issue but a refresh problem related to cells outside the visible area of the page.

    As a workaround, any action that triggers the rendering will fix the issue. You can:

    1) change the workbook window size, or

    2) switch worksheet and then switch back, or

    3) double click some cell, then click another cell

    I will let you know when I have any more concrete information about a fix.

    Hello Freya,

    Yes I definitely do not have manual recalc turned on.  And actually after much testing I believe it is a display refresh issue not a recalculation issue.

    I do have a worksheet that very consistently shows the failure and I will be happy to share it with you.

    Please let me know the best way to work together to resolve this at last.

    Hello! We are so sorry you are continuing to experience this issue. Our support team will be reaching out to a few people to ask you for help in reproducing this. If you have a file that consistently repros, and can tell us repro steps, that will be a great help!!!

    As a first step, we need to confirm that you have manual calculation mode turned off. This can be turned on inadvertently. If the first file opened during a session has manual calc mode turned on, then subsequent files opened during the same session will also get manual calc mode turned on.  When you save any of those files, the setting will be saved in the file.  It's an application setting that is controlled by the first file opened during a session. 

    Can you please take a look and see if perhaps this was turned on at some point along the way?
