Word 2016 hangs when opening a document based on a template

I would like to know if this issue occur with a particular Word template or all Word templates.

Let us try saving the document that is based on template, on the desktop and check if you are able to open it.

Created a simple doc based on a simple template i've been using for years

(Windows 10, Office 2016)

Saved to desktop

Quit word

Double click on document on desktop

Opened on my wife's laptop (running Windows 10 & Office 2013) without any problem

Hi Marc - do you see this when you double click? Does everything work if you start Word 2016 first and then open the document?

Sorry you're having problems - this is an area of the product that is very asynchronous and we have seen occasional race conditions leading to deadlocks when remote network storage is used for templates.

Makes no difference how I open the document

I have the same issue, and it is very frustrating! I create many documents use a .dotx template to start each individual one. When I save the documents I name them and they become .docx files. However, when using Word 2016 I can't open them any more! 

Interestingly, I noticed that when Word 'hangs' while trying to open the saved documents it says it is "Opening:filename.dotx" (where "filename" is my document name). However, I saved the file in .docx format?! So why is it saying it's openineg a .dotx file? Maybe this odd little detail may bring us closer to the solution?
