A family of Microsoft word processing software products for creating web, email, and print documents.
This problem seems to have been sorted now? I can open all template-based documents just fine. Have others noticed the same?

I store my documents in:
OneDrive\Shared Documents\Business
and my templates in
OneDrive\Shared Documents\Templates
As I've done for over a year.
All worked fine in Office / Word 2013
Word 2016 will hang if I try and open a document that is based on a template.
The templates are available.
I've tried renaming the templates and removing spaces in the names but that didn't help.
If I remove the template the document will open and show as based on Normal.dotx.
All templates and documents use the new 2016 file format and are saved as .dotx.
Please note:
I'd rather you didn't reply to this issue if you haven't actually experienced this problem or if you haven't actually tried the fix you propose.

Templates work with Dropbox without any problem.
I'm not waiting Microsoft to fix this issue, I'm moving my files to Dropbox.
When a template is stored in a OneDrive folder, and a document is based on that template, Word tries to read/access the template file. If Word can't reach the online storage, it hangs. For me, this happens frequently with OneDrive for Business.
If you disconnect from the internet, Word seems to have no problem using the locally stored copy of the template and the document opens smoothly. Obviously this is a very cumbersome work around. It may be the problem is actually OneDrive rather than Word.
I am a lawyer and don't have time to fool around every time with this issue every time I need to open a document. I am going to experiment with storing my templates on DropBox. If that works, I will drop OneDrive for Business like a hot potato.
Same problem, although I have found that the files open on Word Online viewer. Is not "great" but at least it helps.
None of the fixes mentioned works for me. I feel this happens when the file tries to locate the template and it just can't find it. The fix should be a some sort of way of extracting the part of the code where it instructs Word to open the template...
REALLY need this fix! Is killing my productivity.
I'll add another +1 to this thread.
I had been holding off updating to 2016 but did it this week and ran into this issue today.
Files opened from O365 SharePoint sites sync'd with OneDrive for business won't open when based on templates that reside in said site/sync'd folder.
Opening the template first and then opening the document does however work (but really not a long term workaround).
