Word 2016 hangs when opening a document based on a template

I store my documents in:

OneDrive\Shared Documents\Business

and my templates in

OneDrive\Shared Documents\Templates

As I've done for over a year.

All worked fine in Office / Word 2013

Word 2016 will hang if I try and open a document that is based on a template.

The templates are available.

I've tried renaming the templates and removing spaces in the names but that didn't help.

If I remove the template the document will open and show as based on Normal.dotx.

All templates and documents use the new 2016 file format and are saved as .dotx.

Please note:

I'd rather you didn't reply to this issue if you haven't actually experienced this problem or if you haven't actually tried the fix you propose.

What I am noticing with Word 2016 on Windows 10 Pro is that Word files stored on OneDrive are hanging.  Not sure it is the same issue, but as you have listed your template is in a OneDrive Folder.  Perhaps relocate the template to a folder that is not on OneDrive and test?

When I moved a file from a OneDrive folder to a Non-OneDrive folder, the file opened just fine.

What I also noticed is that when opening the file from the Computer folder Word was inserting special characters for spaces like "%20" which it should only do if opening from a URL.  In this case it was opening from the local drive, which probably did not recognize these characters and could be the cause.

    Hi Thomas,

I do think that this question was directed at Patrick rather than me.

I am not with MS and have as much or as little insight into their release plans as you do. Needless to say, I am also eagerly waiting for this fix.

Hi Don, thanks for your feedback. Do you have any idea when a fix would be available? I've got multiple customers with this very problem and the ability to give them some time frame would be great.

Exact same issue here, although the workaround to open the template first doesn't work for me.

Excellent; I've had the same problem and it seems the workaround is working... somewhat.
