Word 2016 hangs when opening a document based on a template

I store my documents in:

OneDrive\Shared Documents\Business

and my templates in

OneDrive\Shared Documents\Templates

As I've done for over a year.

All worked fine in Office / Word 2013

Word 2016 will hang if I try and open a document that is based on a template.

The templates are available.

I've tried renaming the templates and removing spaces in the names but that didn't help.

If I remove the template the document will open and show as based on Normal.dotx.

All templates and documents use the new 2016 file format and are saved as .dotx.

Please note:

I'd rather you didn't reply to this issue if you haven't actually experienced this problem or if you haven't actually tried the fix you propose.

    I'll add another +1 to this thread.

    I had been holding off updating to 2016 but did it this week and ran into this issue today.

    Files opened from O365 SharePoint sites sync'd with OneDrive for business won't open when based on templates that reside in said site/sync'd folder.

    Opening the template first and then opening the document does however work (but really not a long term workaround).

    Same problem here... using the workaround (open the dotx first then the docx) seems to work.

    Same problem.

    Redirecting Templates folder to non-onedrive folder does not solve the problem...

    It seems like last update fixed my issue (rel 16.0.6001.1038).

    Yes! After the latest Windows 10 update, the problem of hanging while opening Word or Excel documents has resolved.

    No, the problem has not been resolved.  I must have opened a document from my own OneDrive (which works fine) and was too excited to notice.  Opening an Excel or Word document from OneDrive accounts shared with me (my boss's, for example) still results in the program hanging. Apologies.

    Just adding that opening files saved in Dropbox works properly.  Word opens promptly without hanging.  So, I would have to agree with other posters that it seems like an authentication problem.

    Almost the same for me.

    I mean:

     - I did big november update and office update on my surface pro.

     - I opened one of the docs that usually hangs my word. When it connected to OneDrive to open the template, it asked my again for OneDrive authentication, then it opened the docs without problems in few seconds.

     - Now every docs that before hung words work, on PC without the big november update too.

    Very, very strange... It seems like an authentication issue.
