Word 2016 hangs when opening a document based on a template

Same problem here. Exact same symptoms. Also on Win10 with Office 2016.

As a workaround:

1. Open the template on which your document is based (make sure you open it and don't create a new document).
2. Open the document, you want to edit.

For me this works. Hopefully it will help you, too.

Obviously this is rather cumbersome, but at least I am not blocked anymore.

I do hope that MS will come with a fix for this VERY soon. I have hundreds of documents affected by this.

One more thing:

When inspecting the template, I find 'Custom XML Data'. No idea, what it is and where it came from. I also tried removing it, but it came back.

Maybe this is also a point to check.

In your OneDrive Application => settings => untick

• Use Office to Sync Files
• Use Office 2016 to sync files that I open

What I am noticing with Word 2016 on Windows 10 Pro is that Word files stored on OneDrive are hanging.  Not sure it is the same issue, but as you have listed your template is in a OneDrive Folder.  Perhaps relocate the template to a folder that is not on OneDrive and test?

When I moved a file from a OneDrive folder to a Non-OneDrive folder, the file opened just fine.

What I also noticed is that when opening the file from the Computer folder Word was inserting special characters for spaces like "%20" which it should only do if opening from a URL.  In this case it was opening from the local drive, which probably did not recognize these characters and could be the cause.
