Word 2016 typing is very slow

I just installed Word 2016 version 16.0.4229.1029. I am experiencing very slow typing with a document whose format is as follows:

  • 10,000+ words
  • 91 pages
  • one long table: 2,000+ rows, 5 columns

I have turned off spell checker, corrector, etc as well as turned off all unnecessary Windows 10 Home animation. I even copied it to outside my OneDrive folder.

My computer is as follows:

  • ASUS laptop
  • Intel Core i7-4500U CPU @ 1.80GHz 2.40 GHz
  • 8 GB RAM
  • 64-bit operating system
  • x64-based processor

Prior to this installation, I was using Word 2013 and typing was fast with this doc.

[As I last resort: revert to Word 2013, but how?] 

I have tested other documents and they seem to be fine.

I am having the exact same problem here, and with regard to threads in several other forums, there are many users experiencing the same issues with Word 2016. @ZahirDhalla, could you solve the problem? Thanks for giving an update.

Hello Samuel [and previously Kay too],

I have 'solved' the problem but it requires some work. I figured it was to do with working in Word 2016 on a document that was created in Word 2013 or prior. So I created a brand new 2016 document and, in my case, fresh new tables in it, and then copied and pasted the text from the old pre-2016 version. It worked.

I hope you guys can do the same. Please let us know.

    Struggling with very slow in one particular document.  Tried saving as .doc and then back to .docx, switching to Web view, no footers, disabled Live Preview, etc, etc.... nothing's worked.  This problem only occurs on a Surface not on a PC, so perhaps it's driver related (e.g. Surface GPU)?

    I have seen the same problem and after much trial and error have discovered that it's related to footnotes (not endnotes). As soon as I start adding footnotes in the document, the typing slows down dramatically. The trick I have found is to make everything endnotes while I'm working, then convert them to footnotes when I'm done. That allows me to keep the typing speed up to normal while I'm writing.

    The Word team should look at the code formatting the page when footnotes are being used, and improve the refresh or something to eliminate the lag in that situation. Word developers, are you listening?

    In general, MS developers do not look at this forum.

    You should make your suggestion in the appropriate UserVoice sub forum.  There you can be sure that some developers and/or project managers really are looking at the suggestions there.
