Word 2016 typing is very slow

I just installed Word 2016 version 16.0.4229.1029. I am experiencing very slow typing with a document whose format is as follows:

  • 10,000+ words
  • 91 pages
  • one long table: 2,000+ rows, 5 columns

I have turned off spell checker, corrector, etc as well as turned off all unnecessary Windows 10 Home animation. I even copied it to outside my OneDrive folder.

My computer is as follows:

  • ASUS laptop
  • Intel Core i7-4500U CPU @ 1.80GHz 2.40 GHz
  • 8 GB RAM
  • 64-bit operating system
  • x64-based processor

Prior to this installation, I was using Word 2013 and typing was fast with this doc.

[As I last resort: revert to Word 2013, but how?] 

I have tested other documents and they seem to be fine.

I am having the exact same problem here, and with regard to threads in several other forums, there are many users experiencing the same issues with Word 2016. @ZahirDhalla, could you solve the problem? Thanks for giving an update.

Hello Samuel [and previously Kay too],

I have 'solved' the problem but it requires some work. I figured it was to do with working in Word 2016 on a document that was created in Word 2013 or prior. So I created a brand new 2016 document and, in my case, fresh new tables in it, and then copied and pasted the text from the old pre-2016 version. It worked.

I hope you guys can do the same. Please let us know.

    Hi Zahir,

    Thank you for posting your query in Microsoft Community.

    The issue might be due to non-Microsoft programs conflicting with Office applications or might be due to the issues with Office installation. Let me assist you with the issue.

    Follow the steps mentioned below and check if it helps:

    Step 1: Open Office applications in safe mode:

    Example: Open Word in safe mode

    1. Close Word.
    2. Press the Windows key+ R on the keyboard to open Run window.
    3. In Run window and type winword /safe

    Note: There is a space between 'Winword' and '/'.

    If you are able to work with Word without any problem then the issue might be due to add-ins. In order to disable the add-ins follow the steps given below:

    1. In Word, click on File< Options< Add-ins.
    2. Under Manage select COM Add-ins.
    3. Click on GO options beside Manage, uncheck all the add-ins and click Ok.
    4. Try to open Word and check if it works fine.

    Note: Similarly follow the steps to disable add-ins for other Office applications

    Step 2: Repair Office 2016 installation:

    DO NOT DO THIS STEP

    Step 3: Boot the system in clean boot.

    Clean boot is performed to disable all startup programs and 3rd party services on the machine and check if they are conflicting with the

    Office program.

    Note: After checking in clean boot ensure to reboot the system in normal mode which is explained in the same article.

    If Office applications work fine in clean boot then follow the complete article, perform advanced clean boot to check which program is causing the conflict. Once you have found the problem program, contact appropriate technical support team to update the program.

    Hi, 

    I have quite a few 2016 templates in place with a lot of global clients. Some of them come back and report this issue. We're just about to issue another template where this issue seems less pronounced if I remove all tables with 'around' settings from headers/footers. We will try and achieve the same look and functionality either with 'inline' tables or stick a table cell into a textbox and test the template to see whether that solves the problem for the majority of user.

    Will post an update if it does.

    Good point, while you may get a suggestion that works, if you don't get your fix here, this forum isn't the best place to let MS know about the problem. Although there are some MS staffers monitoring the forum, the "important" ones are looking at 2 other places.

    One is the Win 10 "Feedback Hub" that Zahir suggested. The main disadvantage I see to using it that it is a "black hole". You submit your feedback and never hear back from MS.

    The other option is the "UserVoice" forum. This is a collection of application specific subsites where users are encouraged to submit this type of bug report and to make "new feature requests".  There are 2 advantages to submitting your problem there. First is that other people are encouraged to "vote" and add comments to your suggestion.  The second is that sometimes you actually get feedback from MS, in the form "status updates" and sometimes even comments ...     Go to UserVoice, either through specific links I’ve provided below or create your own suggestions there. That is where MS is looking specifically for this type of user feedback to bring them back to reality from what-ever lala-land they are working in when they make these “improvements”.  Comments (and votes) like these in UserVoice helped to convince MS to roll back the “phat QAT” buttons in 2016 and to at least partially undo the 2016 changes to the way the Pen input works.

    Please do copy the comments you’ve made here and paste them into comments in UserVoice. Also include a link to this question. If you do make a suggestion, copy the link to the UserVoice suggestion and post it back on this question so other people with the same problem can vote for it and comment on it.
