Word 2016 typing is very slow

I just installed Word 2016 version 16.0.4229.1029. I am experiencing very slow typing with a document whose format is as follows:

  • 10,000+ words
  • 91 pages
  • one long table: 2,000+ rows, 5 columns

I have turned off spell checker, corrector, etc as well as turned off all unnecessary Windows 10 Home animation. I even copied it to outside my OneDrive folder.

My computer is as follows:

  • ASUS laptop
  • Intel Core i7-4500U CPU @ 1.80GHz 2.40 GHz
  • 8 GB RAM
  • 64-bit operating system
  • x64-based processor

Prior to this installation, I was using Word 2013 and typing was fast with this doc.

[As I last resort: revert to Word 2013, but how?] 

I have tested other documents and they seem to be fine.

I am having the exact same problem here, and with regard to threads in several other forums, there are many users experiencing the same issues with Word 2016. @ZahirDhalla, could you solve the problem? Thanks for giving an update.

Hello Samuel [and previously Kay too],

I have 'solved' the problem but it requires some work. I figured it was to do with working in Word 2016 on a document that was created in Word 2013 or prior. So I created a brand new 2016 document and, in my case, fresh new tables in it, and then copied and pasted the text from the old pre-2016 version. It worked.

I hope you guys can do the same. Please let us know.

    Thanks Zahir the idea is great, but I managed to do the same thing just by saving my Word doc as an RTF rich text format, and than re save it as Word and it helped. I've tried many other suggestions that were useless.

    I have a NEW document and it still is VERY slow. I also have old documents and they seem to be ok.

    This new document is 1 (ONE) page long!!!!!

    this is far too complicated for me... cant update either. typing is also slow in this text box... john palmes

    This worked for me: 

    To disable hardware acceleration, follow these steps: 

    Start Word 2016. 

    On the File tab, click Options. 

    In the Options dialog box, click Advanced. 

    In the list of available options, click to select the Disable hardware graphics acceleration check box. ... 

    Click OK.

    Saw it in an Office website as a recommendation from a MS Support agent.
