Word 2016 typing is very slow

I just installed Word 2016 version 16.0.4229.1029. I am experiencing very slow typing with a document whose format is as follows:

  • 10,000+ words
  • 91 pages
  • one long table: 2,000+ rows, 5 columns

I have turned off spell checker, corrector, etc as well as turned off all unnecessary Windows 10 Home animation. I even copied it to outside my OneDrive folder.

My computer is as follows:

  • ASUS laptop
  • Intel Core i7-4500U CPU @ 1.80GHz 2.40 GHz
  • 8 GB RAM
  • 64-bit operating system
  • x64-based processor

Prior to this installation, I was using Word 2013 and typing was fast with this doc.

[As I last resort: revert to Word 2013, but how?] 

I have tested other documents and they seem to be fine.

I am having the exact same problem here, and with regard to threads in several other forums, there are many users experiencing the same issues with Word 2016. @ZahirDhalla, could you solve the problem? Thanks for giving an update.

Hello Samuel [and previously Kay too],

I have 'solved' the problem but it requires some work. I figured it was to do with working in Word 2016 on a document that was created in Word 2013 or prior. So I created a brand new 2016 document and, in my case, fresh new tables in it, and then copied and pasted the text from the old pre-2016 version. It worked.

I hope you guys can do the same. Please let us know.

    Hello Daniel, I'm sorry that you did not receive a response yet. Our engineering team looked at your document and found that the typing issues in your document were likely caused by the footnotes being formatted. While we don't have a fix scheduled for this right now, and typing performance issues tend to be varied and differ on a case-by-case basis, a possible workaround is to use Web Layout (click View < Web Layout), since that view doesn't show footnotes. Please give this a try and let us know if it helps.

    I encounter the same problem with a document I created in the current version (not prior) and was able to at least improve the experience during typing by using the web layout. But this can only be a workaround and I wish you'd fix this issue in general.

    Word 2016 MSO (16.0.7830.1018) 32-bit

    Windows 10 Version 1607 (Build 14393.953)

    I am also thoroughly fed up with the day to day problems experienced with Microsoft products. Setting up a new Word 16 document and copying in the Word 2013 content only very briefly fixed the issue of painfully slow typing. After 10 minutes of bliss it was back to letter by letter typing. I am sick of it and wasting precious time in my editing business.

    I always keep the system and products updated  - and what do Windows do to fix issues? Seemingly nothing.

    Hi There,

    I had the same problem and found that "save as" docx solved the problem.

    However, I also found that if I had one old document open and one new, the problem re-occurred, so all documents I open at the same time have to be in 2016 format.

    What sort of careful cut and paste are you doing?

    If it is one field at a time you can speed things up.

    Select the whole table, then use paste special as text only into the new document. This will place the text, separated by `tabs into the new document. Then you can select that text and use the convert to table command. 

    If you are not already doing that, or something similar, I hope it will help speed up your conversion.
