The English Style Options are now available to
Windows Word and Outlook Insiders with Office build
16.0.7167.2015.
If you’re not an Office Insider yet and want to become one, please sign-up here:
https://products.office.com/en-us/office-insider
The update will also release to all Office for Windows subscription users in late August. Office for Mac subscription users are scheduled to receive the update later this year.
Note that we're still working on further improving these options. Please let us know
if you notice false flags (= incorrect flags/unexpected flags), missed flags or incorrect suggestions.
To enable the feature do the following:
In Word 2016:
- Go to "File" -> "Options" -> "Proofing"
- Select the second Writing Style "Grammar &
more" in the drop down in the section "When correcting spelling and grammar in Word" -
if this is greyed out, start a new document and go the Proofing options form there to enable it.

In Outlook 2016:
- From a popped-out mail window, go to "File" -> "Options" -> "Mail". (Don't do this from the main Outlook window.)
- Click on "Spelling and Autocorrect…" in the section "Compose messages". You'll be taken to the "Proofing" tab of the "Editor Options"
dialog.
- Check the checkbox next to "Mark grammar errors as you type" in the "When correcting spelling in Outlook" section.
- Select the second Writing Style "Grammar & more" in the drop down in the section "When correcting spelling in Outlook" (like for
Word).
- If this is greyed out, see step 1.

The following Options are included:
- Complex Words*
- Contractions*
- Wordiness
- Clichés
- Informal Language
- Double Negation
- Jargon
- Nominalizations
- Passive Voice with Known Actor
- Passive Voice with Unknown Actor (No Suggestions available)*
- Words in Split infinitives (more than one)
- Gender-Specific language
- Words Expressing Uncertainty*
- Slang
- Oxford Comma
- Punctuation with Quotes*
- Spaces between Sentences*
*These Options are disabled. To enable them go into the Grammar Settings (Settings... in the screenshot above) and check the checkbox next to the Options you want to enable.
We've also included fixes for known Grammar bugs in this update.
We're working on improving the Grammar Checker further and will release more Grammar Options in the coming months. Since the Grammar and Style Options are now fully ported to new technology, improvements can be released quicker going forward.
Apologies again for the inconvenience the absence of this feature has caused.
Thanks, Nicole
