Checking style in proofing in Word 2016

Indeed, adding [sic] would have made the situation clearer. My thesis was anything but flawless. I actually found months after I had turned it in and received my degree that I had omitted a section of endnotes. I sent them to the department as Corrigenda, to be added to the thesis (I hope before it was bound). Since I don't have actual evidence that the thesis was ever read by more than one person (many years later I got a letter from a scholar who had cited it), I suspect this was not much of a problem. <g>

As for "record time," I actually spent an entire year (rather than the expected one quarter) researching and writing the thesis. Drafts were typed (on a manual typewriter) on canary copy paper for approval by my thesis adviser. The thesis went through many drafts. When it came time to type the 261-page final version, I made a deal with the department: I would buy an italic element for their IBM Selectric (they already had the Greek ball) if they would let me use the typewriter in off hours. I'm sure it took weeks to type. In Word I could probably do it in a week, and it would be a lot more attractive, too.

Thanks, but when I try to sign up to become and Office Insider, I am asked for my Microsoft account.  However, my Office 365 account is not linked to my Microsoft account, so I cannot sign up.  I have Office 16.0.7167.2055 installed, so I would have thought it would be unnecessary to be an Insider.

As matters stand, more than a year has gone by and I am still without essential grammar checks.  It irks deeply that this basic functionality was removed.  As the years go by, MS Word gets dumber and dumber.  The descent into mediocrity is most unfortunate.

Since you have 365, you can do a retrograde upgrade back to Office 2013 if your need for grammar checking is greater than need for any of the "new features" in Office 2016 ...

Sorry, “upgrading” to 2016 is a one-way trip, like falling into a black-hole <grin>

Office 2013 is no longer available at all (bad luck if you wanted it for compatibility or just familiarity).

Everyone I talked to at Microsoft support said that there was no turning back from 2016 if you subscribe to office 365.  Although it took four different attempts to get someone from support to listen to me -  … spoke with her supervisor, took control of my PC and my laptop, uninstalled 2016 and reinstalled 2013.  

One caution - make sure to set office 365 to not perform any updates or you will get 2016 back on your device automatically.

Thanks for everyone’s comments on this thread;  Customers can un-install 2016 and re-install 2013; This is important since due to required functionality on versions of Exchange 2010 or later, Outlook 2016 does not support connecting Exchange 2007.  (See system requirements https://products.office.com/en-in/office-system-requirements ) 

Business subscriptions can directly download Office 2013 (see https://community.office365.com/en-us/f/172/t/409681 .  ) while home/personal can also work through support on getting this resolved as needed.

I had the same issue, I kept getting the answer that it was IMPOSSIBLE from multiple Answer Desk associates!  

After almost giving up, I found a way to download and install the software manually using their own Deployment Tool.  Another good thing about using this tool is that I can keep a copy of the program offline in case I run into issues down the road and want to reinstall Office 2013.

The tool to use is the Office 365 Deployment Tool for Click to Run, normally used for administrators to use for installations across multiple PCs.

After downloading the tool, you just need to edit a couple of configuration files.  One to download the Office archive and one to install the archive.
