Word 2016 100% CPU usage all the time

Hi Guys, just to let you know that the final version of Office does not work properly and have 70-100% CPU issue as reported on numerous posts here. In my case, it's the WORD with which I have the issue with and no remedies posted here help. Please provide the fix as soon as possible, because this bug renders the new suite useless...

Hi,

To resolve this issue, is your installation of Office for Mac fully updated?

In any Office application go to the Help menu and choose Check for Updates to launch the Auto Update app. Let AutoUpdate install the updates and then restart your Mac.

Update us with results for further assistance.

I'm having the same issue on the same software versions.

It's a large document ~130 pages with a lot of tables. Typing and scrolling are both laggy and I'm frequently getting SBBOD when I change a style (e.g. set a highlighted section of text to bold takes ~5 secs).

CPU usage is <1% when Word is in the background, but bring it to the front and CPU is >50%. It jumps to 80-110% when typing or making changes.

I have the latest Word for Windows in a VM with a fraction of the resources allocated and am not seeing the same issues with this document.

Changing to Draft view has sped up scrolling and improved typing lag somewhat, but the high CPU usage remains.

UPDATE: updating to the latest fast preview (15.31 161227) has fixed the lagginess, but still experiencing 40-50% CPU when typing. At least it's now usable.

I have kind of the same issue.

Something that helped me in the right direction was to uncheck "Marking/indication" in the "View" menu (I'm using the Swedish language setting, so I'm unsure how it translates to English). However, I only seem to have a problem in larger documents. If I open up a new, empty, document it works as it should - with or without unchecking the function mentioned above. But when I open a large word-file with lots of tables, it takes up more than 100% of my CPU even when I'm just scrolling - if I don't uncheck in accordance with what I wrote earlier.

Hi Jim,

thanks for a fast response.

Word version is 15.29.1 (161215) installed within last 48 hours

OsX version is 10.12.2 installed today.

I have 16Go of Ram on a Mac Pro retina with an i5 cpu @ 2.7 Ghz. The size of the file I'm editing in Word is 1.2 Meg.

Problem began within last 48 hours, after updates first to office365 package, then to OSX.

I have deactivated the spell-checking as I type option. This did not make any difference to the CPU saturation symptoms (% of CPU for Word use quickly (like in seconds) ramping up to 100% according to the activity monitor for just about any operation performed in word). No other significant CPU use by any other application running at the same time as Word. Then shutdown Word and reopened. No difference. Shutdown the computer (full shutdown, restart) made no difference.

I restarted in safe mode, and this appeared to restabilise Word, same data file, same editing activity. Back to normal Word behaviour. And then back to normal mode where Word again "misbehaves", as before.

I am currently playing with removing apps that startup at login, to see if i can find which, if any, impacts Word. Will let you know what I find.
