Excel (Office 365): Program works, but splash screen won't disappear

Recently, I noticed that when I open Excel for Office 365, the program opens and runs fine, but the splash screen doesn't disappear. It remains in the background once the program starts. Other windows open on top of it, it's just annoying that it won't go away. I can minimize and and move it around, but that's it. I unchecked the box next to "Show the start screen when this application starts", but it still shows up. Updating Office also didn't help. It only seems to be a problem with Excel as neither Word nor PowerPoint has this issue.

I'm sorry that you were encountering this issue and for any inconvenience it may have caused.

This issue was occurring if you had disabled the "Show start screen" (to show a new blank workbook in Excel on boot) and had any add-in enabled.

We have addressed this issue in the latest release of Excel which is now available through Update.

If Excel version 16.0.6769.2015 is the current version, why do I have 16.0.6729.1014? Shouldn't it automatically update?

    Hello Michael,

To narrow down the issue further please answer few questions.

Are you working on domain network?

Do you have any printer connected?

Are you using any third party antivirus?

I followed your instruction and could not reproduce the issue.  I tested this issue on single desktop not connected to domain.

    Hi Jack,

This is the reason I provided repro steps with a freshly-created add-in - i.e. to demonstrate that it's NOT and add-in issue. I have been following these posts closely because my company develops an Excel add-in and clients are blaming us for this issue, when it's clearly not our add-in causing it.

    Cheers, M.

Hi Vardhaman - please see answers below:

Are you working on domain network?

No. Although I have staff on our network and they are also experiencing the issue. So I don't think this is a relevant factor.

Do you have any printer connected?

Yes. I am connected to a Xerox DocuCentre IV C5575. I have been connected to this printer for over 2 years and never had issues like this.

Are you using any third party antivirus?

No. I have completely switched off all anti-virus as I like my machine to run fast. My colleagues all use Windows Defender and we're all seeing the same issue with the Splash Screen, so again I don't think this is relevant.

I am convinced that this is a bug that's popped up as a result of one of the MS engineers editing some of the Excel load or splash screen code in a way which has resulted in the splash screen not being explicitly closed before load is complete.
