I have MS office 2013 email attachments when being opened are displaying "Microsoft word protect view has stopped working" (same for excel) and closes the document. Any clues

The updated driver is now available via Windows Update as well. If you happened to disable hardware acceleration as a workaround before the driver was available, you should re-enable it to avoid potential performance issues. More info here on how to do that.

Thanks a lot for sharing your experiences with the rest of the community.
I would have never thought these two things could be connected to each other but it seems they are. I can confirm this as I too use DisplayLink from my Surface Pro 3 to power 2 24" monitors.
Hopefully DisplayLink will issue an update soon but it's strange it only seems to affect opening Office files in protected mode.
