I have MS office 2013 email attachments when being opened are displaying "Microsoft word protect view has stopped working" (same for excel) and closes the document. Any clues

The updated driver is now available via Windows Update as well. If you happened to disable hardware acceleration as a workaround before the driver was available, you should re-enable it to avoid potential performance issues. More info here on how to do that.

Have you gone to File>Options>Trust Center>Trust Center Settings>Protected View and unchecked the "Enable Protected View for Outlook attachments" item?
This error message has been driving me crazy for months. I appreciate the suggestions for workarounds but why can't Microsoft fix whatever this glitch is to allow us to protect our computers to the max possible and still open attachments without having to save them locally, open explorer, and then open the files? How about a patch that works instead?? How much greater risk do we have by disabling the protected view option? Thanks.
Protected View (or rather, opening an Outlook attachment) in Office 2013 on a Windows 7 64 bit computer does not cause a problem here. Have you tried saving the attachments to the local drive, then in Windows Explorer, right clicking on the document and selecting Properties and then click on the Unblock button and then from within the application, use File>Open?
Either save the attachments to the local drive and then right click on them and select Properties and click on the Unblock button, or in Word, go to File>Options>Trust Center>Trust Center Settings>Protected View and uncheck the "Enable Protected View for Outlook attachments" item (and the others if you wish)
I have a new Windows 7 64 bit computer with a new Microsoft Office 2013 installation. Neither MS Word nor MS Excel work with MS Outlook attachments. Any attempt to open such files triggers the dreaded "Windows not working (looking for a solution)" error message. The work-around described above fixes the problem but essentially you do this by switching off the (non-functioning) Protected View mode of Microsoft Office leaving the computer vulnerable to dangerous files in future.
A patch is needed to Microsoft Office 2013 so that its Protected View mode works.
