"microsoft word protect view has stopped working"

I have MS office 2013 email attachments when being opened are displaying "Microsoft word protect view has stopped working" (same for excel) and closes the document. Any clues

Hi everyone!

The updated driver is now available via Windows Update as well. If you happened to disable hardware acceleration as a workaround before the driver was available, you should re-enable it to avoid potential performance issues. More info here on how to do that.

    Either save the attachments to the local drive and then right click on them and select Properties and click on the Unblock button, or in Word, go to File>Options>Trust Center>Trust Center Settings>Protected View and uncheck the "Enable Protected View for Outlook attachments" item (and the others if you wish)

    In what is probably the best customer support experience I've had in my life, I reached out to DisplayLink about the potential conflict and received a follow up response no more than 5 minutes later. Here's the scoop:

    • DisplayLink has recently been made aware of the issue and is currently testing a new release that includes a fix for it.
      • 11/24 update: per my support contact at DisplayLink, pending no issues are found with the current build the ETA for the updated driver is mid-December.
    • There is a better workaround for this issue than the one previously recommended of disabling Protected View:
      • Open an Office application (I used Word) and go Options > Advanced and check the "Disable hardware graphics acceleration" box and click OK.

    I am happy to report that this resolved my issue and I am now able to preview attachments within Outlook with Protected View still enabled. I didn't even have to reboot for the change to take effect.

    Big tip of the hat to DisplayLink for their stellar customer service and follow up on this. Hope this information can be of help to others dealing with this issue.

    Protected View (or rather, opening an Outlook attachment) in Office 2013 on a Windows 7 64 bit computer does not cause a problem here.  Have you tried saving the attachments to the local drive, then in Windows Explorer, right clicking on the document and selecting Properties and then click on the Unblock button and then from within the application, use File>Open?
