KB2553154 Breaks COM and Active X controls in Excel

Hi

The last windows update batch contained update KB2553154 for office 32 bit.

This update breaks all COM and Active x controls in Excel (i.e. buttons, combo boxes etc.). Like many businesses we use Excel with these controls extensively and this update is crippling Excel for our users.

We have installed and uninstalled it on a number of machines both Windows 7 and Windows 8 and have proved this update is causing the issue.

PLEASE Microsoft withdraw or fix this update we can hardly go around all our pc's worldwide and manually uninstalling it.

Quit Excel.

Start Windows Explorer.

Select the system drive (usually C:).

Use the Search box to search for *.exd

Delete all found files.

I know that this is way beyond when you posted this but I was able to fix this problem by updating Microsoft Office to the latest service pack. Then installing excel2010-kb2956142-fullfile-x86-glb.exe for Office 2010 andexcel2013-kb2956145-fullfile-x86-glb.exe for Office 2013. Hope this might help out someone else out there trying to figure out this problem.  Also this page has some information on fixes as well. https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3017349

    Additional step:

    If the steps above do not resolve your issue, another step that can be tested (see warning below):

    1. On a fully updated machine and after removing the .exd files, open the file in Excel with edit permissions.

        Open Visual Basic for Applications > modify the project by adding a comment or edit of some kind to any code module  > Debug > Compile VBAProject.

        Save and reopen the file. Test for resolution. If resolved, provide this updated project to additional users.

        Warning: If this step resolves your issue, be aware that after deploying this updated project to the other users, these users will also need to have the updates applied on their systems and .exd files removed as well.

    If this does not resolve your issue, it may be a different issue and further troubleshooting may be necessary.

    OK, I've just had someone tell me that they had to reboot after clearing the .exd files before the fix would work. So to confirm the steps:

    Close all Office apps.

    Windows key + R

    In the run box type %temp% and press Enter.

    Locate the Excel8.0 and VBE folders and delete any .exd files there

    Reboot.

    Then retry Excel.

    If that still doesn't work, can you let me know which versions of Office and Windows and whether each is 32 bit or 64 bit.

    First- thanks all for the efforts thus far.

    Looks like this did not fix the issue for me. I also tried the solution from 'Simon Jones [MSDL]' and still no luck. I am continuing to receive the error of 'cannot insert object' when working with ActiveX Controls.

    I am running a 32 Bit version of Windows 7 Professional.

    I am running a 32 Bit version of Microsoft Office (Part of 365 ProPlus)

    I have done a System Restore on some XP PC's we have at work and it fixed it. This was done prior to learning about the .exd file fix.

    BUT I have tried all of the above fixes on the Windows 7 computers with Office 2007 on them without any luck.

    I am running Windows 7 32 bit, Office 2007, and a Windows 7 64 bit, Office 2007

    On the 2 Win 7 Computers:

    I have tried deleting the .exd files.

    I have tried uninstalling the updates (also KB2596927 for the Office 2007 update)

    (in a "dos" screen Type cmd.exe, then type "wusa /uninstall /kb:2596927"), but it errors when you try.

    I have tried a system restore, but it won't restore to an earlier date.

    Would love to find a fix, as we use Excel heavily on a daily basis, and cannot work at the moment!
