Customize Ribbon Size to Make it Smaller

I'm extremely disappointed that Microsoft has made the ribbon so HUGE and does not appear to offer any way of customizing its size other than completely collapsing it.  Between the menu bar, the ribbon, the formula bar, etc. almost HALF of the screen real estate is non-content. Microsoft has it backwards, thinking the more screen space should go to the user interface rather than the content. This is maddening, and it's extremely frustrating that Microsoft doesn't allow me to customize the size of the ribbon to maximize content. Does anyone know of a work around?

And if you don't see that icon right away, you can add it to the quick access toolbar so that it's accessible.  It's called "Touch/Mouse Mode".

    Hi,

I have looked through all of the options in the Quick Access Toolbar list (not just Popular Commands but All Commands) and don't see an icon you described.  What is the specific name of the command I'm looking for?  Is it possible to share a screen grab of the icon itself??  FYI:  I'm on MS Office 2010 and Win 8.1...

BTW, I don't see a command called "Touch/Mouse mode", any idea why that would be??  Also, I am using a laptop that has a touchscreen...

    TIA,

    Jarrel
