How to get images to display in draft layout?

If I paste an image into a Word document, it is only visible in print layout (page mode), not in draft layout (normal view).

But, if I first paste it into Visio and then paste that image into Word, it is visible in both layouts.

I could not find a way to attach a Word document, so I created a screen shot as a JPG. I couldn't get that to upload (I kept getting "The connection was reset"), so I created a shared DropBox folder containing both the Word document and the JPG image. Here's the link:

If I select the first image, I see square handles. If I click on the second image, I see round handles. Clearly, these images are being stored in different formats.

My question is : How can I get all images to display in both print and draft layout?

The "Show picture placeholders" option is not checked.

    To get images to appear in Draft mode in a DOCX file:

    1. Save the document as DOC.
    2. Save again as DOCX.

    Note that this only works if you select the "Maintain compatibility with previous versions of Word" check box in the Save As dialog box as you resave in *.docx format.

    In other words, it isn't the resaving in itself but rather compatibility mode that makes the difference. It forces Word to use the "layout engine" of older versions.

    The only explanation that I know of is that the change is a result of the new layout engine in Word 2013; see previous replies. What you can do is post a suggestion to change Draft view back to it what it once was. Go to https://word.uservoice.com/.

    In the meantime, you could try using Print Layout view with the so-called white space hidden. It will display pages without headers and footers, which obviously isn't the same as Draft view, but it is a simplified view of the page at least.

    That will show graphics. Frankly there is little justification for working in draft mode with modern PC hardware.

    Mostly. One UC where Print Layout mode is a pain is for a very large doc with many images. Moving text around gets impacted by Word endlessly recalculating wordcount and repaginating.
