How to get images to display in draft layout?

You're back. Good. I thought I had made you mad which certainly was not my intent.

Who here as told you or even tried to tell you that you don't know what you want or need? You would know better than anyone. From reading the thread you apparently want and need the ability to insert Visio and or Excel embedded objects in a document.

You could do it using a Visio object before you initially posted and now you have found a way to do it with Excel.

It is true that "Draft" view in Word 2010 is not the same a "Normal" view in Word 2003. I don't know why Microsoft changed the name or functionality. I rarely use either so to me the changes were mute, but I'm reasonably confident that it wasn't done to be intentionally rude or to **** people off.

I think the chances that you will get a meaningful response from Microsoft regarding your feedback are slim and the chances that they will restore the functionality of Normal view in Draft view are slim and next to none.

P.S.  Yes, I agree.  Having to hunt to the last post in the thread is rather stupid.

I have submitted suggestions to many companies. Most of the time, I get at least a polite acknowledgement. Sometimes I even get a change in the software. I have never received so much as a reply from M$FT. You tell me: What do you think the chances are that M$FT will restore the functionality to Normal view?

I have no idea what the chances are that Microsoft will listen. I'm sure they listen as much or as little as any major software company. But if no one tries to post feedback, then there is zero chance of getting a change.

As a workaround, you can try Print Layout view with white space hidden; it is WYSIWYG and works fairly good if you are used to Normal view in older versions of Word.

The Print Layout view does not allow display of the Style Area.  Additionally, the Print Layout necessarily shows you pagination and other things that I don't care about most of the time (footers, footnotes, etc).  they get in the way when you just want to type.  I work in Print Layout when I just want to deal with "finishing".

In Print Layout view, you can choose to hide vertical white space (headers, footers, blank space following a page or section break). Just clear the "Show white space between pages in Print Layout view" option at File tab | Options | Display. This will accomplish part of what Draft view could do in older versions. Of course, the downside is that it won't hide the footnotes or allow you to to see the style area.

I do not work for nor speak for Microsoft. Their programming decisions are their own and the new means of displaying graphics does not allow them to be displayed in draft mode. It was their design choice.

Why not work in Print Layout mode? That will show graphics. Frankly there is little justification for working in draft mode with modern PC hardware.

I work in Draft mode as I want to edit continuous text without the page headers and footers appearing and interrupting the flow. But, of course, it is important to see the embedded images.

I tried the web view but the width of the page on a wide monitor causes problems with this (in web view there is no defined width of the page whereas there is with draft view). 

Draft mode is perfect, if there was a way to see the images.  Or another mode or option to not have the heading and footing displayed while editing.

Any suggestions are welcome.
