How to get images to display in draft layout?

If I paste an image into a Word document, it is only visible in print layout (page mode), not in draft layout (normal view).

But, if I first paste it into Visio and then paste that image into Word, it is visible in both layouts.

I could not find a way to attach a Word document, so I created a screen shot as a JPG. I couldn't get that to upload (I kept getting "The connection was reset"), so I created a shared DropBox folder containing both the Word document and the JPG image. Here's the link:

If I select the first image, I see square handles. If I click on the second image, I see round handles. Clearly, these images are being stored in different formats.

My question is : How can I get all images to display in both print and draft layout?

The "Show picture placeholders" option is not checked.

I do not work for nor speak for Microsoft. Their programming decisions are their own and the new means of displaying graphics does not allow them to be displayed in draft mode. It was their design choice.

Why not work in Print Layout mode? That will show graphics. Frankly there is little justification for working in draft mode with modern PC hardware.

Is there any rational justification for taking away functionality? Is it somehow impure or immoral or unhealthy or dangerous to the social fabric to display images in draft layout?

I don't know the specifics in this case, but I suspect it is the accidental result of underlying changes. They probably changed the tool used to display graphics, the "graphics engine".

To get the images to display in draft layout, save as Word 97-2003 format, which cannot use the new graphics handling method.

And then I have to give up on all of the features of the latest format that are incompatible with the new format.

So is there no way to get images to display in draft layout in the current Word document format?

Is that the "new and improved" graphics handling method? It sure seems like a step backwards to me.

Well, if it's document corruption, it's been that way in every document I have that contains images for at least 6-7 years, including brand new documents. I have been pasting images into Word via Visio for a very long time.

In any case, you have the document. Isn't there some way to detect corruption and even repair it?

What I really want to know, as indicated in the thread title, is how I can get images to display in draft layout. I usually work in draft layout and it is a royal pain not be able to see the actual content in my documents.
