How to get images to display in draft layout?

If I paste an image into a Word document, it is only visible in print layout (page mode), not in draft layout (normal view).

But, if I first paste it into Visio and then paste that image into Word, it is visible in both layouts.

I could not find a way to attach a Word document, so I created a screen shot as a JPG. I couldn't get that to upload (I kept getting "The connection was reset"), so I created a shared DropBox folder containing both the Word document and the JPG image. Here's the link:

If I select the first image, I see square handles. If I click on the second image, I see round handles. Clearly, these images are being stored in different formats.

My question is : How can I get all images to display in both print and draft layout?

The "Show picture placeholders" option is not checked.

    What you can do is post a suggestion for Microsoft to change the behavior of Draft view (formerly Normal view). Try the feedback forms at http://mymfe.microsoft.com/Office/feedback.aspx?formID=375 and https://feedback.office.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scrx=1.

    I understand that this is a user-to-user forum and I don't expect anybody here or anywhere else, for that matter, to change anything at Microsoft nor was I asking them to. My problem is with people who tell me that I don't know what I want or need.

    I have submitted suggestions to many companies. Most of the time, I get at least a polite acknowledgement. Sometimes I even get a change in the software. I have never received so much as a reply from M$FT. You tell me: What do you think the chances are that M$FT will restore the functionality to Normal view?

    Whatever. It sounds like a distinction without a difference to me.

    It seems like it's important to you to defend or justify M$FT's decision to cripple Normal view. For me, M$FT has removed function for no good reason that I can see. But then I am not an apologist.

    You can have the last word. I am done with this discussion.

    PS: Does it bother you that this forum software always positions you at the first post in any thread? This thread is now up to 3 pages, which means that I have to page forward 3 times to get the the latest posts. I quick search reveals that this was reported at least as long ago as last February. It's still broken. There were several pages of comments. Most complaining about the forum software, but a few apologists offering workarounds or claiming that everything is fine. Everything is not fine. This is the absolute worst forum software I have ever used. In addition to the positioning problem, it has minimal word processing capability. No doubt you will give me some workaround or tell me it is working just fine. I have an extensive collection of workarounds for the myriad deficiencies and outright bugs in M$FT software. Bye.

    It is an "image" only in the sense that any other graphical representation of data on the screen (e.g., characters arranged to form words) is an image. 

    What you have is an embedded OLE object.  It is an inlineshape with type enumeration 1. Unlike say a "picture" of your house that you might insert in a documet which would be an inlineshape with type enumertion 3.

    The embedded OLE object can be make to appear in Draft mode.  You've shown that. The picture or image of your house can't.

    CTRL+SHIFT+F9 does not convert and OLE object into a plain image.  CTRL+SHIFT+F9 breaks the hyperlink.  Basically your object linked and embedded is now just an object embedded.   

    How is that functionally different from an image?
