How to get images to display in draft layout?

If I paste an image into a Word document, it is only visible in print layout (page mode), not in draft layout (normal view).

But, if I first paste it into Visio and then paste that image into Word, it is visible in both layouts.

I could not find a way to attach a Word document, so I created a screen shot as a JPG. I couldn't get that to upload (I kept getting "The connection was reset"), so I created a shared DropBox folder containing both the Word document and the JPG image. Here's the link:

If I select the first image, I see square handles. If I click on the second image, I see round handles. Clearly, these images are being stored in different formats.

My question is : How can I get all images to display in both print and draft layout?

The "Show picture placeholders" option is not checked.

To get the images to display in draft layout, save as Word 97-2003 format, which cannot use the new graphics handling method.

And then I have to give up on all of the features of the latest format that are incompatible with the new format.

So is there no way to get images to display in draft layout in the current Word document format?

Is that the "new and improved" graphics handling method? It sure seems like a step backwards to me.

Is there any rational justification for taking away functionality? Is it somehow impure or immoral or unhealthy or dangerous to the social fabric to display images in draft layout?

It would appear that your document is in .doc format. In a .docx document, images are not displayed in Draft view under any circumstances, but in .doc documents, inline images (that is, those with text wrapping set to In Line with Text) and images in frames are displayed in Draft view. Images with any other wrapping style and images in text boxes (or text boxes containing text, for that matter) are not displayed in Draft view. This behavior is unchanged from earlier versions (you'd see the same result in Word 2003).

In .doc-format documents, square black handles indicate an inline image; round white handles indicate a "wrapped" graphic.

I don't know the specifics in this case, but I suspect it is the accidental result of underlying changes. They probably changed the tool used to display graphics, the "graphics engine".

If it was accidental, then it's malpractice. This is a multi-billion dollar corporation with a huge QA department.

But then this is the same corporation that has been releasing bug-riddled software for decades as so meticulously documented by Woody Leonard and others. Some of the bugs go back 4-5 releases. I think a better adjective is "careless" or "arrogant".

I didn't think you could get any images to display in draft view, so you are farther ahead than I thought possible.

Rather than draft view, try Web Layout view.
