Red X on slide thumbnails in Master View

In PowerPoint 2013, in the presentation I'm creating, the thumbnails view doesn't show the thumbnails, but instead displays a large red X on every slide. The slides look fine in the slide view itself.

Diagnosis and recommendations welcome.

    Hi All - I applied SP1 release and thought /hoped it was fixed, but nope, nada - still the big Red X.  Darn!

    PPT Text Tables - I have identified one action that triggers the Red X - changing a PPT text table once that was already populated.  This has occurred several times since upgrading to SP1 and it just occurred on multiple occasions a few minutes ago. 

    Something happens when working with graphics too, but I haven't isolated the occurrence beyond that.

    Please MS - I really want to brag about you, not talk about how your SW doesn't work!

    I am not sure if this helps but I had the exact same problem described above and simply saved the images to my local drive and then recreated the slides from my pictures folder. Initially I had simply cut and pasted them directly from an external source (screen clipping) without saving them to my hard drive. Now it works fine as long as I build the slide from images stored locally.
