Can't open doc - says moved, renamed or deleted

I am trying to open a document in Word but a dialogue box keeps telling me:

"Sorry, we couldn't find your file.  Is it possible it was moved, renamed or deleted?"

It then states the correct name of the document and where I filed it.

I am using Windows 8

Microsoft 365 and Office | Word | For home | Windows

    1. You can try to shorten the file name and the root folders' name first.

    Ex: D:\Data Analysis\Working on\Preview Data\Data 2018.03.08.docx (or .xlsx, or something...).

    to D:\Analysis\Work\Preview\2018.03.08.docx (or .xlsx, or something...).

    1. You can shorten file name, Copy the file to Desktop and try to open it.

    When the location address and the file name too long. Office cannot open it and will give you that message.

    Yes this is the case with me I know this was an old response but I really could do with the hep. My file was initially opened from an email and when saved I cant reopen it, the message is that the file has been moved renamed or deleted .

    SOLVED | Per a previous comment I renamed the xls file to a shorter name and it opened. Odd this was an issue considering I was working off this file for the past couple weeks, but regardless happy this is now working.

    When you open a file directly from an email attachment, it is saved in a temporary folder. Unless you explicitly save the file to your Documents folder (preferably before you start working on it at all), you are in danger of losing it. Sometimes it is possible to retrieve files saved in temporary folders. The instructions provided by MVP Beth Melton in this thread have been helpful to many users.
