No local file storage for OneNote on Mac version?

Add another disappointed customer here. I purchased a full version of Office 2016 and as a recent OneNote user at work I was hoping to use it at home too.

How about this for a use case? A podcast I listen to discussed how one of the hosts uses OneNote for organizing some projects. They kindly shared their sample files out on Google Drive so that others could download OneNote and check out their files in order to see how they use the application.

Quite frankly, that's a fantastic advertisement for OneNote so I was really looking forward to giving it a try. As others have noted, my work environment is within an enterprise environment and hosting any files externally is a non-starter. Similarly, the use case for these shared .one files would be for my own personal use, not work, and it would not be appropriate (or allowed) for me to download these sample files on my work PC.

Not being able to use this functionality at home on a Mac is highly disappointing. Similarly, consistently referencing that the application is free is highly insulting to those of us that received a copy as part of a fully paid version of Office 2016.

I’ve used OneNote on PC for years and loved it.  Just obtained for my Mac and was startled to see only an option for cloud storage.  Like many others, I will *NEVER* use this product if it forces me to store content offline in anyone’s ‘cloud’ … MS, Apple, Google … it does not matter.  And that’s a shame, b/c I have to say, it is a great program (at least the PC version was).   INMO, whoever made the business decision at MS to ship a product in this fashion made a mistake.  OK, that’s excusable.  There have been worse business decisions by many companies, but most times, they are remedied when the customer market balks.     But for MS to ignore the rather large pushback from customers across the user spectrum - corporate and individual alike - on the surface appears to be pure arrogance.  I see responses from the OneNote product team responding to individual forum posts on other topics which are interspersed among a much larger number of comments decrying the local storage issue.  Clearly they have seen the complaints and have just chosen not even to respond.  Not even a "we hear you", although in other announcements, it's stated "you spoke and we listened".  

Doesn't this issue merit being acknowledged by the company?

I have to work with other people on files stored collaboratively on our group's Windows fileserver. That is where the files are stored and from which everyone accesses them and edit them collaboratively. I think this is a pretty common scenario. It works great for my colleagues, who all use Windows and are able to open the files. However, since I do my personal work on a mac, this is a huge inconvenience, because I can't open things that are on the server. You said "in the free version for MAC it only syncs to the cloud". Is there a version I could purchase that would allow me to open local files. I would gladly pay for a program if it allows me to open end edit local files.

I agree.  Sounds like Microsoft wants to do some snooping.  Also, who wants to put their stuff on line where hackers can have access.  Microsoft is not above it.  Very disappointing.  I guess I won't be using this program after all.
