I just tried OneNote for a Mac.
I noticed that there is no way to load or save a local OneNote file.
I've been using OneNote on a PC for years. Really like it a lot. Was hoping to
now use it on my Mac.
I don't know why OneNote is setup this way. I can't even load my existing personal
files from the Mac. The decision to use a cloud service should be mine and not forced into
it. Even Evernote lets me store locally.
I use it for both personal and work related projects. I cannot put work projects out on
a public cloud repository so this new version is a no go for work. At this point I think
I'll look at Mac equivalents to OneNote and convert to something else.....
Free is great, but I would pay for a fully functional Mac version of OneNote. Please reconsider
local file storage.
Disappointed.

Everyone is complaining since 2014 about not being able to open local .one file in Onenote 365.
Can someone from Microsoft give us an indication on when they will sort this out?

I don't trust the cloud and have no use for the app.
I am a heavy OneNote user at work, in fact we are focusing our entire project management and design research information system around OneNote (this is a corporation of 500+ people!). It's a thing of beauty. I wanted to repeat that at home for personal projects. You undid that. The internet is unreliable, Time Warner is unreliable, US Cellular is unreliable. Local drives on a computer are reliable, fast and backing them up on the web is a good idea.
I will now explore the capabilities of Evernote.

Many of my meeting notes are covered under nondisclosure agreements or other restrictions that legally prohibit me from storing them outside our company or, in some cases, outside my immediate business unit. As such, I will not be able to use OneNote on the Mac until I can save files locally on physical media under my control.
This literally makes it impossible for me and my colleagues to use OneNote. Oh well...Evernote, here we come, I guess.
Add another disappointed customer here. I purchased a full version of Office 2016 and as a recent OneNote user at work I was hoping to use it at home too.
How about this for a use case? A podcast I listen to discussed how one of the hosts uses OneNote for organizing some projects. They kindly shared their sample files out on Google Drive so that others could download OneNote and check out their files in order to see how they use the application.
Quite frankly, that's a fantastic advertisement for OneNote so I was really looking forward to giving it a try. As others have noted, my work environment is within an enterprise environment and hosting any files externally is a non-starter. Similarly, the use case for these shared .one files would be for my own personal use, not work, and it would not be appropriate (or allowed) for me to download these sample files on my work PC.
Not being able to use this functionality at home on a Mac is highly disappointing. Similarly, consistently referencing that the application is free is highly insulting to those of us that received a copy as part of a fully paid version of Office 2016.
