When I opened up my laptop this morning (8/16/14) there was a pop-up on the screen telling me there was an update available for Microsoft Word Starter 2010 and asking me if I wanted to download it. It did not look like the typical Windows or Office update notification. I closed the pop-up and opened Windows update and ran it. There were some updates available, but none that said they were for Word Starter. IS there a new Update for Word Starter or is this someone trying to get me to download a virus?

We heard back from the product group. The dialog is expected for a legitimate Office 2010 starter update. It appears for click to run scenarios where the path is missing a piece of information between the build that the user is running on and the latest available build.
The august update that was pulled is a Windows update, not an Office update.

I went through the repair process as directed in the Knowledge Base article, but the pop-up still appeared pretty much right away. However, I discovered by going to the Control Panel/Programs and Features that I evidently do have "Microsoft Office Starter 2010 - English." At least it shows in that window. Who knew? I couldn't see it any where else, even searching for "Starter" in the Start menu search function . Oh well, guess I'll just have to keep clicking "Cancel" until I get a good answer from this forum. I sure don't want to run this update based on the feedback I've seen so far. Thanks to all for participating and suffering on my behalf.
As you are using Office 2010 Professional, you can get rid of the Office Starter version that was probably installed by the computer manufacturer. The following article should show you how to uninstall it:
