When I opened up my laptop this morning (8/16/14) there was a pop-up on the screen telling me there was an update available for Microsoft Word Starter 2010 and asking me if I wanted to download it. It did not look like the typical Windows or Office update notification. I closed the pop-up and opened Windows update and ran it. There were some updates available, but none that said they were for Word Starter. IS there a new Update for Word Starter or is this someone trying to get me to download a virus?

Hi everyone,
We heard back from the product group. The dialog is expected for a legitimate Office 2010 starter update. It appears for click to run scenarios where the path is missing a piece of information between the build that the user is running on and the latest available build.
The august update that was pulled is a Windows update, not an Office update.

That image is exactly what I see when I go to the File/Help section in Word. The popup is pretty random; it doesn't seem to be associated with having Word running but it may be that something from Office has to be running. Hard to tell, since I always have at least one Office app (like Outlook) running. The repair you suggested seems to be benign so I will give it a try. Unless it's immediately evident that it hasn't helped, I'll wait a week or two before I report success. Again, thanks for your help, Doug, and your patience.

I'm sorry. There is so much conversation going on about this. The pop up appears as soon as I turn on my computer. If I try to open excel or word while the pop up is on the screen it won't allow the program to open but once I click the X in the right top corner of the box the programs will open. I read in one of the responses that this could be popping up due to a problem with the data path. Is this true? It's been happening for about a month now and it's super annoying to have to close it everyday. Is this safe to click ok? Or is there another way to remove this? Thank you.
