When I opened up my laptop this morning (8/16/14) there was a pop-up on the screen telling me there was an update available for Microsoft Word Starter 2010 and asking me if I wanted to download it. It did not look like the typical Windows or Office update notification. I closed the pop-up and opened Windows update and ran it. There were some updates available, but none that said they were for Word Starter. IS there a new Update for Word Starter or is this someone trying to get me to download a virus?

Hi everyone,
We heard back from the product group. The dialog is expected for a legitimate Office 2010 starter update. It appears for click to run scenarios where the path is missing a piece of information between the build that the user is running on and the latest available build.
The august update that was pulled is a Windows update, not an Office update.

I wish I knew. You say you downloaded it. Does installing it require an extra step?
I've been ignoring/closing this suspicious looking pop-up for many weeks now although those pop-ups have been appearing less frequently for the last few weeks. Microsoft Office 2010 Starter came preinstalled on my computer & although I don't use it every day I do use it often. Just as a follow-up, today I opened it only to find that all of the options that were previously available are no longer there, i.e. no choice of font size, no option to cut & paste, no choice of typeface, NADA! All there is is a blank document page where you can type text & & save it, nothing more. In retrospect it might now be a good idea to install the update since it seems to have been verified. But it would still be good for Microsoft to give some type of official notification when they change their update forms so we don't all have to confront these questions again.
Possibly you have just minimized the Ribbon? Are you seeing the Ribbon but not seeing the buttons? If you're just seeing Ribbon tabs, double-click on one to restore the Ribbon.
