When I opened up my laptop this morning (8/16/14) there was a pop-up on the screen telling me there was an update available for Microsoft Word Starter 2010 and asking me if I wanted to download it. It did not look like the typical Windows or Office update notification. I closed the pop-up and opened Windows update and ran it. There were some updates available, but none that said they were for Word Starter. IS there a new Update for Word Starter or is this someone trying to get me to download a virus?

We heard back from the product group. The dialog is expected for a legitimate Office 2010 starter update. It appears for click to run scenarios where the path is missing a piece of information between the build that the user is running on and the latest available build.
The august update that was pulled is a Windows update, not an Office update.

Thank you for this link and also your update of it's success. I'm a little too chicken to click "repair" as I've disabled the updates but am worried it will somehow start the download again (which for us would never end after hours and hours!). For the time being, I'm living with trying to ignore the pop-ups. ugh!
If you change the settings to "disable" (as per the screenshot on the previous page), this will stop the pop-ups from appearing. I changed mine a couple of days ago and no pop-ups since.

When i came back from a long holiday i turned my laptop on for the first time on 25th August and found the above mentioned Click to run pop up. I thought it suspicious but after all the searches ( internal and external) it appears to be genuine but very bad promoted by the program creators. As i hardly ever use Microsoft Office on this laptop i followed the well detailed instructions given by you all here and opened a Word file, clicked Help/ Update Options and disabled the updates. Got the usual pop up window asking if i want this program to make changes to the hardrive to which i clicked Yes and then got a notification "This program will no longer be updated". All ok now. No more pop ups.
I had the 5000 version, not the 5001. Am on Windows 7.
