When I opened up my laptop this morning (8/16/14) there was a pop-up on the screen telling me there was an update available for Microsoft Word Starter 2010 and asking me if I wanted to download it. It did not look like the typical Windows or Office update notification. I closed the pop-up and opened Windows update and ran it. There were some updates available, but none that said they were for Word Starter. IS there a new Update for Word Starter or is this someone trying to get me to download a virus?

Hi everyone,
We heard back from the product group. The dialog is expected for a legitimate Office 2010 starter update. It appears for click to run scenarios where the path is missing a piece of information between the build that the user is running on and the latest available build.
The august update that was pulled is a Windows update, not an Office update.

Suzanne....I am the Original Poster on this thread and am satisfied that the update is genuine at this point. I went ahead and clicked OK on 2 of the 3 computers I have a few days ago. (Haven't seen it pop up on the 3rd, but it's my Hubby's computer so he may have already done so) I have not had any issues since allowing the install on either of those two. I would, however, still like to know why the update method suddenly changed and why we were not advised of the change before hand. Maybe we can prevent this from happening again in the future by continuing to press for an explanation. Thank you so much for all of your help with this.
At this point, we've got several MS people running around in circles working on this. Since updates do not come under the purview of our usual contacts, they had to "reach out" to other people, who had to consult still others, with the result that we got the post by "DK - MSFT," which was intended to settle the question but, since the profile was not authenticated, just muddied the waters. We've since gotten confirmation that DK is an official Microsoft employee, and I've marked her reply as the answer to the original question of whether the popup was genuine, but we've resubmiitted queries about the other issues ("Why now?" and so on), and people are still looking into it.
We may never get resolution that satisfies the skeptics, but it seems that the update mechanism may (for whatever reason) have changed for this specific occasion (or perhaps as a policy for the future). Those who don't want dodgy-looking updates can turn off the update option (as illustrated by ConfusedKate77) or continue to refuse them. Those who want to be patched up to date can accept the update at face value.
