When I opened up my laptop this morning (8/16/14) there was a pop-up on the screen telling me there was an update available for Microsoft Word Starter 2010 and asking me if I wanted to download it. It did not look like the typical Windows or Office update notification. I closed the pop-up and opened Windows update and ran it. There were some updates available, but none that said they were for Word Starter. IS there a new Update for Word Starter or is this someone trying to get me to download a virus?

Hi everyone,
We heard back from the product group. The dialog is expected for a legitimate Office 2010 starter update. It appears for click to run scenarios where the path is missing a piece of information between the build that the user is running on and the latest available build.
The august update that was pulled is a Windows update, not an Office update.

I've had this pop up window appear for several days now. I previously X out or click cancel.
My computer is now "hanged", meaning the IE is thinking when loading a page, Chrome is the same thing. This sometimes happens when there is an update going on. So when I got the pop up again, this time I clicked OK. Word or Excel do NOT open. They are hanged as well. Anything I try to open now on my computer is hanged. Even the fix it app from Microsoft is hanged. I am now in Safe Mode w/networking option to try and find out what is going on.
While on Safe Mode, I try to open Word or Excel and none open. Nothing happens.
We really need an answer about this! Why is it taking Microsoft so long?
Although, I now wonder if this is as a result of the Microsoft Updates that keep your PC safe and up to date. I have my Microsoft Updates (something totally different to the pop-up mentioned here) set to "ask me before downloading Microsoft updates" (which I do regularly), but I HAVEN'T downloaded their recent August updates (phew! read below).
There was a problem about a week ago with the August Microsoft Updates and users have been advised to uninstall the August update! .... Users getting the "blue screen of death", etc.

Anyway, does this Office pop-up tie in with anything to do with problems at Microsoft regarding the updates?

So this means it is a legitimate update and is safe to let it run? SO we know why some who have done so are having issues now?
