When I opened up my laptop this morning (8/16/14) there was a pop-up on the screen telling me there was an update available for Microsoft Word Starter 2010 and asking me if I wanted to download it. It did not look like the typical Windows or Office update notification. I closed the pop-up and opened Windows update and ran it. There were some updates available, but none that said they were for Word Starter. IS there a new Update for Word Starter or is this someone trying to get me to download a virus?

Hi everyone,
We heard back from the product group. The dialog is expected for a legitimate Office 2010 starter update. It appears for click to run scenarios where the path is missing a piece of information between the build that the user is running on and the latest available build.
The august update that was pulled is a Windows update, not an Office update.

I had this pop up appearing, and eventually pressed okay Tuesday 19th Aug.
3-4 minutes later, 'update has installed' message.
Later that evening, I had a warning from my full McAfee security, that,- 'WARNING. ANOTHER COMPUTER HAS JUST CONNECTED TO THIS COMPUTER.'
At which point , straight to shut down, and then unplugged everything.
In the years I have been using McAfee I have NEVER had that warning message, which I presume meant I was being hacked.
Very suspicious that both events took place on the same day.
I have done a full scan with McAfee and Microsoft Security Scanner, and both scans show 0 infection.
I have changed passwords on my router.
I have done a system restore back to 6 days previous to this.
Still quite worried about my system.
This may have been mentioned before. If so I apologize.

This page applies to multiple Office 2010 products, and includes Office Starter.
I believe that by following the steps listed for your version of Windows, the necessary updates will be made to Office Starter 2010. Hopefully this will stop the pop-ups.
*** UPDATE ***
Since doing the update at the above Microsoft web site, the popup has not returned. Unless someone has a better idea, or a better method, it appears use of the Microsoft update at above web site will resolve the problem safely.

This is not an exact option.
If you go to File, Help, you are given "Options" or "Check for updates". "Check for updates" does nothing but tell you how to update.
"Options" brings up "Trust Center Settings" for which I've DISABLED:
.... but STILL the pop-up appears!
