When I opened up my laptop this morning (8/16/14) there was a pop-up on the screen telling me there was an update available for Microsoft Word Starter 2010 and asking me if I wanted to download it. It did not look like the typical Windows or Office update notification. I closed the pop-up and opened Windows update and ran it. There were some updates available, but none that said they were for Word Starter. IS there a new Update for Word Starter or is this someone trying to get me to download a virus?

Hi everyone,
We heard back from the product group. The dialog is expected for a legitimate Office 2010 starter update. It appears for click to run scenarios where the path is missing a piece of information between the build that the user is running on and the latest available build.
The august update that was pulled is a Windows update, not an Office update.

Thank you for this link and also your update of it's success. I'm a little too chicken to click "repair" as I've disabled the updates but am worried it will somehow start the download again (which for us would never end after hours and hours!). For the time being, I'm living with trying to ignore the pop-ups. ugh!
Update: For us, changing the settings to "disable" still hasn't made one of the update pop-ups go away. The pop-up I'm talking about isn't the original "fake-looking" one, but is one at the bottom of the screen when I first bring up the computer, go online, or open Word or Excel. It says "Internet Connection Was Lost, click here to continue download", which we've just clicked to ignore each time. I can live with that.
Doug--Without thinking, I went ahead and installed the update to Word Starter 2010 that I received yesterday. Both the large file I had been working on and the program became non-responsive at the conclusion of the update. From the error message, it would seem that my file had been corrupted. From the unformatted copy of my file I was able to retrieve, I could not even recognize my work. Luckily, I stumbled upon your advise above. The simple repair instruction worked perfectly--both my program and file appear to have come out of the repair unscathed. Thanks so much! Jim
