When I opened up my laptop this morning (8/16/14) there was a pop-up on the screen telling me there was an update available for Microsoft Word Starter 2010 and asking me if I wanted to download it. It did not look like the typical Windows or Office update notification. I closed the pop-up and opened Windows update and ran it. There were some updates available, but none that said they were for Word Starter. IS there a new Update for Word Starter or is this someone trying to get me to download a virus?

We heard back from the product group. The dialog is expected for a legitimate Office 2010 starter update. It appears for click to run scenarios where the path is missing a piece of information between the build that the user is running on and the latest available build.
The august update that was pulled is a Windows update, not an Office update.

What version of Office do you have? Is it a "Click-to-Run" version. If it was installed using Click to Run technology, there will be no Office files in the Programs folder on the C drive, but on a virtual Q drive. In the Windows Control Panel, "Microsoft Office Client Virtualization Handler" will appear in the list of programs.
According to the information from Microsoft, the dialog appears for click to run scenarios where the path is missing a piece of information between the build that the user is running on and the latest available build.
If you are using a "Click-to-Run" version, you might want to consider changing to an MSI based version of Office. See:
I would make sure that you can perform steps 5, 6 and 7 BEFORE performing step 4.
Also, make sure that you have your Product Key FOR OFFICE. If you do not have it, you may be able to determine what it is by running the free BelArc Advisor, which will make an inventory of your system, including the Product Keys for applications that you have installed.
Frankly, I find this whole conspiracy theory quite amusing and it reminds me of something about gift horses and mouths.
Speaking of horses, the persistence of the 'fake/bogus update' theory is also reminiscent of a horse no longer living, as well as beating thereof.
Thank you, Dkuy. The only help I need is to find some way to make this dialog box disappear forever. I don't have Starter so I don't plan to run any update to it, but there doesn't seem to be any option to say "never bug me about this again" or something similar. This pops up 2-3 times a day and I either hit the "Cancel" button or the X in the upper right, but it comes back again a few hours later. There should be some way to refuse the update for keeps. Any info you have would be great. Barb
