When I opened up my laptop this morning (8/16/14) there was a pop-up on the screen telling me there was an update available for Microsoft Word Starter 2010 and asking me if I wanted to download it. It did not look like the typical Windows or Office update notification. I closed the pop-up and opened Windows update and ran it. There were some updates available, but none that said they were for Word Starter. IS there a new Update for Word Starter or is this someone trying to get me to download a virus?

Hi everyone,
We heard back from the product group. The dialog is expected for a legitimate Office 2010 starter update. It appears for click to run scenarios where the path is missing a piece of information between the build that the user is running on and the latest available build.
The august update that was pulled is a Windows update, not an Office update.

So, Microsoft: now I'm getting BOTH a Click To Run pop-up: "An update for Microsoft Office Starter 2010 - English is now available online. Please remain connected to the internet for the duration of the update. Do you wish to start downloading the update now?" ... AND an Office-branded "Applying updates" pop-up window as well.
I received the usual Windows Update on Tuesday 12/9 - although it was more painful than usual. (For example, KB articles were missing online, so I could not readily determine whether I wanted all the updates that were offered.)
Not a smooth transition and I CANNOT tolerate losing all my docs, or restoring to original factory settings!
WHAT is the clean path forward here??
I followed the link to Microsoft and saw the article and popup box there suggesting this update was genuine. However, I received an update through the Update Tool module on 10 December:

The popup box continues to appear and I still refuse to download it in this unusual manner given the disaster it caused last time -- having to restore the PC to original factory settings. I figure I can survive without it -- if it was that essential the update would be offered through the Update Tool. Call me a skeptic -- but I just want to be safe.
The same thing happened on my computer yesterday and I closed the window down.
It reappears each time after rebooting my computer.

If so it's sure an odd way for MS to push an update via a popup as opposed to including it with Tuesdays "Windows updates".
If it is indeed the MS update I would appreciate a confirmation from someone @ Microsoft.
second try ... I allowed this update and it created a disaster on an 80 page document. Ariel Narrow was replaced throughout and I can no longer select that font. it tells me that the font is Ariel Narrow but it is a font used in my subtitle of the 80 page document. Now I will have to do this in a different font which is something I want to avoid since other chapters have been done in Ariel Narrow.
IT ALSO ERRASED ALL OF MY DOCUMENTS. Microsoft done it to me again. One more reason to not be happy with microsoft
