When I opened up my laptop this morning (8/16/14) there was a pop-up on the screen telling me there was an update available for Microsoft Word Starter 2010 and asking me if I wanted to download it. It did not look like the typical Windows or Office update notification. I closed the pop-up and opened Windows update and ran it. There were some updates available, but none that said they were for Word Starter. IS there a new Update for Word Starter or is this someone trying to get me to download a virus?

We heard back from the product group. The dialog is expected for a legitimate Office 2010 starter update. It appears for click to run scenarios where the path is missing a piece of information between the build that the user is running on and the latest available build.
The august update that was pulled is a Windows update, not an Office update.

To collect the problems, please carefully read all the posts in this thread.
As I mentioned in my previous post, both my Windows 7 notebook and PC have Word Starter 2010 pre-installed; the "Update Options" is not set to "Disable Update" in both of the Word Starter 2010. However, the pop-up appears on my notebook but not on my PC. I have up-to-date Norton installed on both my notebook and PC.
While Norton doesn't catch this pop-up as a virus/scam, Microsoft claims that the pop-up is theirs.
So Microsoft really needs to clarify this issue as so many problems related to this pop-up have been reported in this thread.
Simply claiming its legitimacy doesn't solve all the problems reported in this thread.

In the response from Microsoft, it was stated:

And that could certainly explain why you only saw the update notification on one of your two computers.
However, if you and others want to continue to question the issue feel free to do so.
