Official Word Starter update?

When I opened up my laptop this morning (8/16/14) there was a pop-up on the screen telling me  there was an update available for Microsoft Word Starter 2010 and asking me if I wanted to download it.  It did not look like the typical Windows or Office update notification.  I closed the pop-up and opened Windows update and ran it.  There were some updates available, but none that said they were for Word Starter.  IS there a new Update for Word Starter or is this someone trying to get me to download a virus?

Hi everyone,

We heard back from the product group. The dialog is expected for a legitimate Office 2010 starter update. It appears for click to run scenarios where the path is missing a piece of information between the build that the user is running on and the latest available build.

The august update that was pulled is a Windows update, not an Office update.

Thanks!

Just a thought, but could it be a broken Windows Installer?

I recently had trouble with a number of other programs trying to legitimately update (Skype and Java, specifically.) After much crawling through fora, looking for why these programs were failing to update correctly and not offering me useful information about the failure, I discovered that a mid-August Security update broke Windows Installer. I removed the offending bit and have had no problems with installing things since.

Is it possible that this broken security update is also causing Office Starter's (badly-implemented) update to fail on installation as well?

(And yes, I too have seen the skeezy "Click To Run" pop-up on my machine. In fact, I came here trying to figure out if it was legit. I'm now convinced that it's not malicious, although it does look hastily put-together. That does not fill me with confidence, given the other broken update. Thank you Suzanne, for doing the hard work!)

The thing with my Word starter is exactly this "A pop up at the bottom right of my screen came up (with the Office Logo in the bar next to the clock) saying that Microsoft Office is downloading the required feature... Microsoft office may appear unresponsive temporarily as the required files are downloaded." and this has been the case since last update 12 aug14...had checked my computer failure reports and its all because of this. Actually, it really weird as it says that my internet is disconnected and ofcourse it´s not, it´s up n running...but there is for sure a bug in the last version of Word starter and Microsoft gotta do something about it! My excel starter works fine and its the same version, so the bug is in either downloading features to get Word starter going OR its a bug in Word starter latest version.

i tried the standard answer of repair..didnt help...tried to delete it and install again...could not delete it!!!??? so what is going on in word starter?

and i agree, its not for free..i bought my Vaio almost 2 yrs ago and it was included in the package. All i need and i want it to get back to normal..Microsoft support..where are YOU?
