When I opened up my laptop this morning (8/16/14) there was a pop-up on the screen telling me there was an update available for Microsoft Word Starter 2010 and asking me if I wanted to download it. It did not look like the typical Windows or Office update notification. I closed the pop-up and opened Windows update and ran it. There were some updates available, but none that said they were for Word Starter. IS there a new Update for Word Starter or is this someone trying to get me to download a virus?

Hi everyone,
We heard back from the product group. The dialog is expected for a legitimate Office 2010 starter update. It appears for click to run scenarios where the path is missing a piece of information between the build that the user is running on and the latest available build.
The august update that was pulled is a Windows update, not an Office update.

Thank you guys for being adventurous and pressing the "Ok" button before us :)
I've updated, I was a little bit worried because nothing happened after I clicked "ok". Finally,I received the "Updates have been successfully applied" message like 3 minutes after clicking.
I was hoping this update was to make MS Office work with win8.1 but I still have the compatibility problem message.

I followed your lead .
I opened Word and let it run in the background for a while and then checked it's Update Options and saw that Apply Updates had been added to list of available options. I clicked on that and then that Click To Run pop up window appeared. This time I clicked on OK (since it was obviously linked to the running MS Office Starter 2010). I got the same message as you where it says it has to close the program and to save all work, and then I got the Click To Run Application Manager/ Active Download window.
Finally I got a Successfully Applied window.
I'm now up to date the same as you.
Office Starter reports the Click To Run Version is the current 14.0.7130.5000 while the Word Starter Version is 14.0.7128.5000 (still the same version as before the update).
I wish Microsoft would at least be consistent in the way they send out updates.

Ridiculous and annoying.
I guess this past week hasn't been a good one for Microsoft, what with this update fiasco and last Tuesday's redacted Security Updates's (**MS14-045**).
