When I opened up my laptop this morning (8/16/14) there was a pop-up on the screen telling me there was an update available for Microsoft Word Starter 2010 and asking me if I wanted to download it. It did not look like the typical Windows or Office update notification. I closed the pop-up and opened Windows update and ran it. There were some updates available, but none that said they were for Word Starter. IS there a new Update for Word Starter or is this someone trying to get me to download a virus?

Hi everyone,
We heard back from the product group. The dialog is expected for a legitimate Office 2010 starter update. It appears for click to run scenarios where the path is missing a piece of information between the build that the user is running on and the latest available build.
The august update that was pulled is a Windows update, not an Office update.

Note to Microsoft: Assuming that these messages are genuine, popping up a home-made-looking message box with no context, prompting someone to download or install something, with no information about how to check that it is genuine, is a VERY BAD idea. Especially so when this pops up unexpectedly from nowhere years after initial installation. It should be obvious that people are going to be suspicious of it and fear that it is a virus.

Not correct. It's called "Microsoft Office Starter 2010"
From the product itself..
I see the version I have is 14.0.7128.5001 and **The most recent Click-to-Run release is version 14.0.7130.5000**released on Tuesday, August 12, 2014.
The updates are supposed to be installed automatically but this one wasn't and instead I and others have been seeing this pop-up "click to run" box instead.
I agree it's uncharacteristic of MS to do an click-to update this way but it's certainly not unheard of.
If anyone who's already installed this can verify which version they now have it would be helpful.
All I'm looking for is verification from someone at Microsoft whether this in fact is from them and that it's alright to go ahead and install it.
One thing is certainly true: Office Starter is a Click-to-Run installation. Let me check with my Microsoft sources to see whether or not this update is genuine. One clue that it might not be is that it refers to "Microsoft Office Starter 2010," whereas Microsoft calls it "Microsoft Office 2010 Starter."
