My Word randomly capitalizes the letter "i" at the start of words, how do I get it to stop

I think I figured out what was going on. If you have a space to the right of the cursor and you type "i", it assumes it's a standalone word. So the problem occurs when I accidentally end up inserting text before a space. But the space may not be visible, of course. It's not really a bug: how is poor Word supposed to know that you don't mean "i" to be a word if there is a space both before and after. (I guess one solution would be to de-capitalize immediately as soon as you add some other letters.)

Deleting "i" from the autocorrect list solves this completely, of course.

Autocorrection in your browser (which should actually be called predictive text) is a feature of the browser or the operating system. It is not related to Microsoft Word

Except it only happens in Word. Not in the browser, and not in any other app - so it's not the iPad doing it. Also, this issue has been experienced by people across all sorts of devices - only in Word. So it's absolutely Word that is doing it.

For what it's worth, when I changed the font, Word started behaving normally again.

Different people report slightly different versions of the problem, but for me it was only ever with documents based on one specific template. It was downloaded from a company I was sort of doing some work with at the time, and you were required to use that template to generate certain documents they needed.

From online conversations I had in various back channels, I definitely was not the only person who had this problem with that template, yet it's equally clear not everyone did. No-one could figure out any obvious factor that all and only the people having the problem had in common, but as far as I know it was never looked into with any real rigour.

I went here back then (probably like two years ago now) hoping it was a known issue, but apparently it isn't. Seems it's just common enough that you can find other people in the same situation if you look, but not common enough for MS or anyone else I've found to have a diagnosis, much less a solution.

I'm not sure I still have the template so I can't speak with authority on safe mode. If no-one else speaks up, I'm home sick and might have some time on my hands to try that in the next day or two.

This is not a default setting. You must have added these words yourself.
