excel 2013 crashes in windows 8.1

Hi,

I've made a fresh install of windows 8.1, and then office 2013. However excel 2013 crashes every time right after I try to scroll down.

  • Works in safe mode
  • There are no add-ins installed
  • Other office programs work fine
  • already completely uninstalled (via fixit) and reinstalled the software.
  • running windows 8.1 pro

"take a back-up of that OSF.DLL file and delete it.

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office 15\root\Office15\OSF.DLL

Or

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office15\OSF.DLL

Once the file is deleted open Excel and check if the issue persists."

    Don't worry; the file is simply restored from the installer cache, but this process does seem to fix the problem.

    This is SO frustrating!!! Downloaded the OFFCAT but no icon and it won't open.  I'm running 8.1 and Excel crashes EVERYTIME.  It also is slow to respond.  I'm unwilling to mess around with DLLs unless I'm positive I know what I'm doing which I wouldn't.  Any other suggestions?  WORD works fine most of the time, it's just EXCEL, which I use much more frequently that has an issue.  Thanks.

    I feel your pain. I had similar issues a while ago. Not sure that there is a single fix but here are some ideas including and in addition to previous posts:

    1. Is everything updated? That's Office as well as Windows? I know it's obvious, but best to check.
    2. Deleting the DLL file, as shown above. The agent from MS (above) warns against this but it has proved effective so it might be worth a try. Navigate to the OSF.DLL in File Explorer: "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office 15\root\Office15\OSF.DLL" or "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office15\OSF.DLL" or just search for it. Back up the DLL file to any temporary folder before deleting it. Restart the system. The file should be reset in the next update but the existing one might have become problematic.
    3. Is the "Avast" anti-virus issue relevant to your system? If you use it, there are fixes suggested above and here: "http://blogs.technet.com/b/the_microsoft_excel_support_team_blog/archive/2013/11/04/excel-2013-crashes-when-you-attempt-to-scroll-down-the-page.aspx"
    4. Prevent initial Excel macros from executing: Start Excel holding down the SHIFT key. It isn't a permanent fix but it might give you a chance to explore your code. You can do the same thing if Excel is already open but you want to prevent macros executing when opening a file.
    5. Are you using Visual Basic? If so, check any VB code that executes within Excel at startup, usually in "This Workbook" or "Sub Workbook_Open()" procedure. I've found that undefined arrays can cause a problem. If you don't know what this means, then it probably isn't the problem.
    6. If all else fails, it might be worth going in for the subscription model of Excel in Office 365. These versions are constantly monitored and updated, but of course it also means constant payment.

    Good luck! I know how frustrating this is.
