excel 2013 crashes in windows 8.1

Hi,

I've made a fresh install of windows 8.1, and then office 2013. However excel 2013 crashes every time right after I try to scroll down.

  • Works in safe mode
  • There are no add-ins installed
  • Other office programs work fine
  • already completely uninstalled (via fixit) and reinstalled the software.
  • running windows 8.1 pro

"take a back-up of that OSF.DLL file and delete it.

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office 15\root\Office15\OSF.DLL

Or

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office15\OSF.DLL

Once the file is deleted open Excel and check if the issue persists."

    Didn't work and Outlook crashed on Opening after trying this recommendation.

    Glad I followed the back-up then delete step.

    To fix Outlook, just copied the file back into the folder I deleted it from.

    I believe that I have solved this problem on my system.  As I learned that OSF.dll tries to communicate with the printer, I checked and noted that I had an add-in to Word 2016 of a label printer called DYMO.  I removed this add-in and now my SpellCheck works fine and does not crash. 

    It sure took a lot of research to get to a solution, but I think I now have one.  Spike

    I have a similar problem of Word 2016 crashes when using SpellCheck on two specific sentences, I found a similar problem reported in Word 2013 that was caused by the file OSF.dll. One fix then, was to rename or remove the OFS.dll file. 

    I had already reinstalled Word 2016 (32bit) on my Windows (64bit) system which did not correct this problem.  So, I went to C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\root\Office 16\OSF.dll and renamed it XOSF.dll.  I then rebooted my system and tested Word 2016 SpellCheck on the two examples I have that trigger a crash.  During SpellCheck, Word waited a long time saying (not-responding) and then it came back and corrected the misspelled word without any error.

    Apparently, OSF.dll is somehow involved with this failure. I don’t like the long (not-responding) delay, but it does seem to eliminate the crashes. Does anyone have any knowledge about the possibility that Microsoft has identified this problem within Word 2016 and possibly issued a corrected OFS.dll file?

    1. Did you refer to Anita Oakley's responses posted in this thread?
    2. Does this issue occur with other Office applications?
    3. What is the complete error you receive when Excel crashes?

    Check Event Viewer and see if you're able to find any warning/error related to Office/Excel and post back the same information to know about cause of the issue.

    a) Initiate Run by pressing the Windows Hot Key + R. Now type eventvwr.msc and press Enter on your keyboard to launch the Event Viewer application.

    b) When Event Viewer opens up you can look at the left pane and view the logs regarding the specific action (Microsoft Office) on Windows.
