"Read Mode" in Word 2013 does not look as the "Take a Tour" document says - wonder why so?

  • This question is based on Take a Tour document of Word 2013.

  • It says, as you see in the image below, that I can view a Word document in Read Mode where as the icon shows, the document will appear in book fold

  • But then, as I click on Read Mode Icon, the following is what I get, NOT in book fold view as the icon shows

  • Wonder, why it is so, or what have I done wrong?

You can get a two-page spread in Word 2013 by clicking on Zoom in the Zoom group on the View tab. Then click the arrow beside Many pages and choose 1 x 2 Pages as shown below.

This approach with Word 2013 produces the following page order and layout with a gap between two pages in the centre. This could be good for viewing but not for Press Dummy which I will discuss later in this post.

    and,

Here, in case a doubt comes, OP speaks of Read View so where does Press Dummy question comes from, and of what relevance it is?  I spoke of Read View because most people won't understand Press Dummy. The relevance of Press Dummy comes from the fact that I used Word 2007 for creating Press Dummies but, with identical settings in Word 2013, I cannot produce Press Dummies; and, only difference between these two editions (in this specific context) was the Read View. I have explained these in depth and with illustrations in my prior posts of this thread, and therefore, I am not going to repeat them here.

First, it is necessary to understand different types of layouts used in printing industry depending on various consideration, a topic I am not going to deal with, at this point. I want to stick to the issue (a) what is expected of Word 2013 (b) What was available with Word 2007.

So, following are different types of binding techniques, and the publisher choses the right one for him -

Now, this is what I was able to produce (see illustration below) using Word 2007 but cannot do so using Word 2013. Look at the page sequence, page look (without any gap at the centre), and compare with Zoom approach result. Here, it is relevant that Perfect Bound technique was used as volume (batch size) was high (5,000 copies) and four-color printing (CYMK model) with Spot UV Finish.

There may be situations when I may need to use 2-up Saddle Stitch binding, which I did use for my following 2003 publication (PageMaker 7 illustration). You may want to see the page order and over all looks (without any gap at the centre).

Again, I may need another style of page sequence and, of course, page layout without any gap at the centre. Actually, I did use it in the past, and may even use in future. You may want to look at illustrations:

These PageMaker layouts were also possible with Word 2007.

What I am looking for is viable approach using Word 2013 and produce this type of Press Dummies.

If that's not possible, then I shall have to find other alternatives -

    • Buying another license for Word 2007 for my new PC (Win 8.1 + Word 2013) is one possibility (in this case Word 2013 will become a total waste after these 3-4 months use).
    • Using my old PC (Win 7 + Word 2007) for this limited purpose, could be another possibility.

Is this what your printer looks like?

The Read Mode icon is just an icon.

A few of the books I have designed and typeset can be seen at http://wordsintotype.mvps.org/Books.htm (or you may want to "Look inside" at http://www.amazon.com/Looking-Lights-Music-Joanne-Rains/dp/0964372746 or http://www.amazon.com/Meet-Me-Butterfly-Tree-Fairhope/dp/059537042X). These are just the commercially published ones; I have also formatted others for private publication.

But my point about "Book fold" was that it should not be used unless you actually plan to print the book as a folded booklet. If it is being sent to a printer/publisher for traditional printing, it should be sent as separate pages (and in this day and age, usually as a PDF).

I do not restrict my work to designing and typesetting. That is what we proudly call specialization (restricted view). I don't send separate pages to printer and leave rest to be done by him. I send the complete dummy based on what type of binding I want so that sorting process can get done with ease and accuracy after taking impressions (physical printing). I get involved into paper selection, lamination, binding process, costing, promoting, and distribution arrangements. I am a registered publisher and I assign my own ISBNs, and I work with different options, at different times, to have a comparative view, and budget allocation. I have already explained to you what prompted me to explore hidden potential of Word 2007 and then utilize to the hilt. But with Word 2013 that advantage has either disappeared, or calls for launching another exploration.

Anyhow, I am clear that nothing worthwhile will come out of further discussion and these discussions are robbing me of valuable time. The discussion began with a simple question and ended up with a big discussion which was not intended. I do not wish to let myself drift any further.

    Regards
