Office iPad and OneDrive Issues - Missing Folders

After trying out Office Word, Excel and Powerpoint on my iPad it seems to me that OneDrive integration is broken.

The main problem is that various folders do not show up in the Office Apps on the iPad. These missing folders though do show up in the OneDrive app for iPad.

I've also had the Office Apps lock up when trying to refresh a folder. Either the program locks up and I have to restart it or, the refresh icon just spins forever.

To troubleshoot the issue I've removed the Word app, reinstalled and reconnected my OneDrive account. I've done this a couple of times and each time when I try to view one of my folders, the app hangs. After restarting the app the folder I was trying to view has missing subfolders.

If I add a subfolder after I've viewed the folder in Word (for example) the new folder shows up. However, none of the folders that are missing will ever appear, no matter how many times I try to refresh the folder.

Oddly enough the missing folders are different between Word, Excel and Powerpoint.

My "Mac Docs" folder should have 25 folders. Word shows 16 folders, Excel shows 9 and PowerPoint shows all 25. However, PowerPoint also has trouble refreshing the folder, and after I've removed some folders, its still displaying the removed folders.

Office on iPad has great potential for me, especially with OneDrive integration, however, at this stage it appears to be quite buggy.

Today we shipped an update to Office for iOS which should fully solve the problem of folders/files taking a long time to show up (or never show up).  I apologize that it took a while to get this fix to everyone, but we had to be certain to not cause new issues in the process.

Please retest the issue and let me know if our update fixed your issues and if it didn't then please provide details so that we can investigate.

Thank you for the patience!

Derek

I am not sure if this helps you, but it has fixed the problem for me.  I found that the folder types in my OneDrive were set to Picture folders, not Document folders.

By selecting the folder in Onedrive web application, the properties have a "Folder Type" when you click on the change hyperlink it gives you the ability to chnage the type from Pictures to Documents via radio button.

Once I performed this task all of my folders appeared. in the iOS Office Apps.

Seems that OneDrive determines the Folder type, from the content placed into the folder.

Quote: "Also, if you really want to browse OneDrive via the Open tab you could take the drastic step of reducing the number of folders in your OneDrive service.  I know that this is a painful workaround but we are unaware of any other way to work around this problem."

This is is not a work around!  It is a total abdication of our whole folder and file system!  It is not just painful, it is completely unjustified!  If you can't give us an app that works, then you have no business trying to sell us a subscription to a service that makes that claim!  Because we are paying $99 for a subscription service that is completely unworkable and unusable!

We have no access to our files and folders via your apps.  And meanwhile, other office apps, with far less resources behind them than Microsoft, have no trouble at all accessing our files in your same cloud service in milliseconds!  Why can't you, with your own apps access them at all?

We are paying for a subscription so that we can create and edit in the Office apps for iPad.  That alone should make this problem's solution the highest priority for Microsoft.

These apps, although somewhat limited on the iPad, are nonetheless much more capable in many ways than any others I have tried, and heaven knows I have tried numerous others.  But this particular issue so severely handicaps Microsoft's Office apps for iPad, as to make them virtually unusable!

If we cannot even create folders within the Office apps, and so have to go to Onedrive to do even this simplest of operations, and then are unable to access them from the Office apps once we have created them in Onedrive, then how are we to recommend the use of these apps?

The apps in and of themselves are very capable, and hold tremendous promise.  But, because of their inability to access their own cloud service, Onedrive, we find that they are completely unable to deliver on that promise.  I know that many, many persons were very disappointed that Microsoft chose to allow access only to Onedrive from their Office apps for iPad.  But if the result is that the apps themselves are not even allowing access to their only recourse for a cloud service, then perhaps the time has come for Microsoft to allow access to a cloud service that actually works, such as Box, Dropbox, or other well known, and widely used cloud services.

This is not an isolated problem affecting only a few people.  It is clear that it is affecting people all across the board so to speak, if they have any reasonable amount of folders and files.  No reasonable person should expect that in a cloud service providing tens of GB's of space for storage, that we should have to be limited to a minuscule amount of folders and or sub folders just to be able to use the space.  I have 48 GB of space available in my Onedrive account.  Should I be expected to only use a small portion of that space because the apps are so handicapped that they are unable to deal with more than a few folders and sub folders?  What a ludicrous supposition!

As I said at the outset, we are paying for a service, and I don't believe that the service should be so handicapped that we cannot use the service that we are paying for.  On behalf of all those experiencing this problem, I appeal to Microsoft please to quickly resolve this problem, so that our confidence in Microsoft and their Office apps for iPad is not found to be misplaced!

All my folders were marked as "Folder Type" "Documents" so Aaron_78's fix doesn't apply to me.

I don't know about other users that are having this issue, but to me it seems that it has something to do with the size of the folder. I have lots of subfolders and files. I wonder if the app is trying to download the index for the entire directory tree and times out.

Anyway, still no fix for me. Though now I sometimes get an error message "Cannot Connect to Server The server may be unavailable. Check your internet connection and try again."

I certainly don't have a connection problem because I can successfully browse to a number of different folders.

Hopefully MS will fix this soon. Since it seems this thread is marked "Answered" we may need to start a new thread.
