Why are my onedrive documents opening in read-only mode after installing office 365 home edition?

I'm opening a word document from my Onedrive folder on my local machine and it's opening in Word 365 in read-only mode. Why is this  and why can't I open the document in Word 2010?

    I am having this problem as well. They are editable in other online storage programs from all my devices. Google drive opens them in a google docs but at least they are not read only. I want to purchase more space on onedrive but if the docs are read only it makes the service less valuable.

    My (rogerschuman) reply on 9-2-16 now needs editing, as I have experienced the problem again. What I did was right-click on the doc in file explorer and under properties saw that it was not marked as 'read only' but still, it had become 'read only' the moment I made a move to edit. So I marked it read only in properties then unchecked it. When I opened the doc it was now OK to edit and stayed that way when I closed and saved the changes. This is cumbersome to say the least, especially when you must do this repeatedly. I hope Microsoft corrects this soon.

    If the OneDrive folder is syncing to your machine. Open an explorer window, find and right click on your OneDrive icon in the navigation pane. Select properties, and under the general tab make sure that the "read-only" box in the Attributes section at the bottom is unchecked/blank. That should allow you to edit files locally.

    This "fix" has been suggested numerous times in this thread, and it has been found to be ineffective.

    I'm convinced that it's a glitch and that there isn't a "fix". It happens then it doesn't on my machines - and not on all of them all of the time.
